About Sound Heritage

Preserving Your Sound For Over 40 years

Housed in Nanaimo’s historic downtown, Sound Heritage is a sanctuary for the analog heart. We don’t just fix equipment; we restore the history of high-fidelity audio.

Hearing Is Believing

In an age of disposable digital boards, we believe in the physics of sound. Our shop specializes in component-level repair, diving into discrete circuitry to find the exact source of failure. Whether it’s matching vacuum tubes or calibrating a 40-year-old turntable, we ensure your equipment leaves the shop sounding better than the day it was unboxed.

Strongly recommended. Nathan and his staff gave great advice on a used turntable, and sold it to me at a very fair price. They even demonstrated it in the store. Picked up a new record while there; the vinyl was like new. They are friendly, personable, and welcomed us in even though I didn't think I was going to buy anything that day. I will be back for records, and more equipment. Thanks!

Nathan and the team at Sound Heritage were amazing. I have a vintage and rare turntable brought over from the UK and I couldn’t get the machine to operate correctly. Sound Heritage took on the responsibility and kept me updated on the progress. They have brought the turntable back to life and it’s playing better than ever. Fantastic job well done and I would happily use their services again. Plus the shop has a great selection of vinyl and cool vintage HiFi for sale.

if i could give more than 5 stars i would !! i came from vancouver planning to get just a record player, but left with said record player, receiver, and a couple of records. nathan was incredibly helpful and so kind - he clearly knows and loves his stuff, and the community he’s built there was evident in the half-hour or so i spent there. i would gladly make the trip across to come and visit again!

Nathan spent over an hour with me going over a dozen different combinations for my first Hi-Fi system. He showed me what to look for used in everything from amps, tuners, and receivers, to speaker builds and I left with a whole system and I couldn't be happier! Prices were competitive with facebook but with better service and guaranteed performance.

If you are looking to get into vynal or your looking to upgrade your system, this is the place to go. There are not many stores that offer a selection of vintage gear, but this is the best there is. Nathan will help you find what you are looking for. He will even let you test anything in the store. Also a great selection of vynal, tape and cd's if you're looking to add to your collection.

Jody

The Turntable Technician

Jody’s introduction into vinyl started in his youth with being gifted a record player by his brother; paired with his tinkering mind, it peaked a life-long fascination with how mechanical functions work. He would then work as a mechanic for many years.

During the big COVID19 isolation, many people relaxed and waited for time to pass. Jody, however, saw it as an opportunity to challenge himself and learn something new—throwing himself into multiple non-functioning turntables, using Youtube “University” to learn all the in’s and out’s for turntables.

Almost 7 years later with hundreds of successful repairs under his belt, what keeps Jody loving repairing turntables is finding the problem within a component when the client has already condemned it for the garbage, “it seems happy it’s working again and not forgotten in a junkyard”. Jody’s favourite audio brand is Pioneer, “specifically the older well built models; they’re rock solid, super heavy and have great mechanics”.

Mike

Systems Specialist

An electronics enthusiast in his youth, learned electronics and digital theory while fixing electro mechanical devices by age 6. Persisting with his electronics interests throughout his youth and upon graduating high school. Mike embarked on a 10 year technical support role with Derges McPadden Office Products. During this time Mike provided client technical support, consulting and creation of the company’s technical services products and systems.

Starting his own partnership (TMC, Technology Management Corporation) in 1991 and growing the company to a substantial size after 20 years, eventually, Mike and his partners decided to sell their venture. Resulting in Mike semi-retiring to his Vancouver Island tech farm to pursue development of land management technologies.

After a decade of ‘making friends with the plants and animals’ on his farm. Mike decided to get back connected to the tech support world and reached out to Nathan’s Facebook call for audio technicians. Shortly thereafter they were away and soon reached their 100th audio system repair.

“There are times when you just know meeting a person is a good thing. This is one of those times. Lots of hard work and a common desire for improvement with solid colleagues and awesome clients has placed us to where we are today. Then there’s the music. Kind of like the icing on the cake and a reward for a hard days repairs and pondering of what the old engineers were thinking and hearing”

Dave

The Master Repair Technician

Dave has been into electronic and mechanical components since he was a kid, working with electrical components since grade 2, always taking them apart and putting them back together—now he does it professionally!

Dave has 40 years of technical and mechanical experience, working with electrical companies in retail, independent, repairing, and alike. Dave also has been in many training programs held by big names, including Hitachi, Toshiba, and many others. Also owning his own motorcycle shop for many years, across multiple states and provinces, he connected with Sound Heritage in 2025.

We personally dub him “Super Dave” as he can repair any unit—having hundreds of successful component repairs with Sound Heritage alone. Dave’s favourite part of his work is “getting to see all the cool different equipment”, as he loves analog music and can’t imagine a life without his vinyl set up. Through all the components he’s repaired, Sony is among his favoured manufacturers.

Will

Speaker Technician

Will, ironically, started his repair journey, in the early 80s, needing a repair for his own speakers! He did a trade with local speaker dealer, and repair business owner, Al Reimer; a trade that turned into a 10 year assistant position and mentorship for Will. Al Reimer was deeply knowledgeable, having partook in the industry since the 60s. Together they built and repaired PA Systems for many corporations in Nanaimo, Vancouver, and Parksville.

After Al’s passing, Will continued as a service technician for many of their contracts, including for local venues, The Queens and Malaspina Theater (VIU). What keeps Will in the speaker repair business is the love of music, and being able to make something better. He “can see how cheaply something is made and how to make it better”, specifically for larger/mass-manufactured companies, where they choose higher output over higher quality.

Will’s favourite part of doing repairs is the sense of accomplishment, and appreciation, for a much improved component. As for brands, specifically vintage speakers, Will says Sansui’s are “always worth looking at” as they were top of the domestic market in their time; as well JBL, is “always exceptionally thoughtful in design. Old is awesome”.

Spencer

High-End Restoration Technician

Getting into stereo in his youth, his first memory is his dad playing Neil Diamond on vinyl seeing the curtains pulsate from the bass! He would continue to tinker as a child, taking components apart and putting them back together; becoming the resident tech savvy repair kid within his friends and community. Eventually, Spencer bought a broken unit, researched, and learned how to understand schematics.

Through the years, what keeps his momentum to repair components is the gratification and pride within the challenge, and successful repair, of a system, “the dopamine hit when a relay kicks in and everything starts working”. A handful of years ago Spencer started his repair business formally and connected with Sound Heritage, for him, cosmetic restoration is just as important as a component’s innards, “looks just as good on the outside, as it does on the inside”.

Spencer’s favourite part of the job is the community of people who love music and connect with it through the components it’s played on, whether at home or on the road.
